Temporal scaling in information propagation

چکیده
For the study of information propagation, one fundamental problem is uncovering universal laws governing the dynamics of information propagation. This problem, from the microscopic perspective, is formulated as estimating the propagation probability that a piece of information propagates from one individual to another. Such a propagation probability generally depends on two major classes of factors: the intrinsic attractiveness of information and the interactions between individuals. Despite the fact that the temporal effect of attractiveness is widely studied, temporal laws underlying individual interactions remain unclear, causing inaccurate prediction of information propagation on evolving social networks. In this report, we empirically study the dynamics of information propagation, using the dataset from a population-scale social media website. We discover a temporal scaling in information propagation: the probability a message propagates between two individuals decays with the length of time latency since their latest interaction, obeying a power-law rule. Leveraging the scaling law, we further propose a temporal model to estimate future propagation probabilities between individuals, reducing the error rate of information propagation prediction from 6.7% to 2.6% and improving viral marketing with 9.7% incremental customers.

Estimating IDF based on daily precipitation using temporal scale model
The intensity –duration –frequency (IDF) curves play most important role in watershed management, flood control and hydraulic design of structures. Conventional method for calculating the IDF curves needs hourly rainfall data in different durations which is not extensively available in many regions. Instead 24-hour precipitation statistics were measured in most rain-gauge stations. In this stud...
متن کاملAn Effective Modality Conflict Model for Identifying Applicable Policies During Policy Evaluation
Policy evaluation is a process to determine whether a request submitted by a user satisfies the access control policies defined by an organization. Modality conflict is one of the main issues in policy evaluation. Existing modality conflict detection approaches do not consider complex condition attributes such as spatial and temporal constraints. An effective authorization propagation rule is n...
متن کاملReflection and transmission of electromagnetic waves at a temporal boundary.
We consider propagation of an electromagnetic (EM) wave through a dynamic optical medium whose refractive index varies with time. Specifically, we focus on the reflection and transmission of EM waves from a temporal boundary and clarify the two different physical processes that contribute to them. One process is related to impedance mismatch, while the other results from temporal scaling relate...
متن کاملUsing Label Propagation for Learning Temporally Abstract Actions in Reinforcement Learning
Temporal abstraction plays a key role in scaling up reinforcement learning algorithms. While learning and planning with given temporally extended actions has been well studied, the topic of how to construct this type of abstraction automatically from data is still open. We propose to use the label propagation algorithm for community detection in order to construct extended actions, within the f...
متن کاملLinear and Nonlinear Mechanisms of Information Propagation
The mechanisms of information transmission are investigated in a lattice of coupled continuous maps, by analyzing the propagation of both finite and infinitesimal disturbances. Two distinct regimes are detected: in the former case, both classes of perturbations spread with the same velocity; in the latter case, finite perturbations propagate faster than infinitesimal ones. The transition betwee...
